Hello everyone,

Today the Year Twos are taking home two letters about exciting events happening soon.

The first is our trip to the beach at Zandfoort, which is next Friday (3rd July).

The following Friday will be our  ‘ Experience Evening’ held at the Upper Junior site – please read details in the letter.

We have been learning about ”Seaside Holidays in the Past” as part of our Geography/History topic, and here is a link to find out all about how Victorians enjoyed their holidays. (click on the picture). What vehicle did the Victorians use on the beach for getting changed and swimming?

What a great end of our busy half term!  To enhance our science topic plants and animals we spent an afternoon in Amsterdamse Bos.  We found a whole variety of minibeasts including caterpillars, beetles, daddy longlegs, ladybirds, ants and even a frog.  We set all the little beasts free however Gabriel found one snuggled up in his jumper when we got back to school.   We hope you all enjoyed our fun filled afternoon and thank you to all the mums who came along to help.

We are having fun looking at all sorts of inventions, from long ago to current day!

Click on the picture to take you to a fun website, where you will read about lots of everyday inventions.

Which ones do you think are ‘time saving’ inventions?

Which ones are really useful?

Next week we are looking forward not only to our Sports Day on Thursday, but also our Year 2 trip to the Amsterdamse Bos on Friday (28th May). So far the weather forecast is looking very encouraging! A letter will be sent out with the children very soon with details of the trip and what to bring etc.

We have enjoyed our first few days of the Summer Term, and despite a few absentees (due to the Volcanic ash) we have picked up momentum and started our new topics! We look forward to welcoming back the children who have been delayed next week.

Topics this term:

Science – Plants and Animals. We also look forward to our school trip to the Bos later in May, when we will be looking for insects and enjoying the outdoor climbing area. Details will follow nearer the time.

Topic: Famous People and Great Inventions. We will be doing some research into famous people and how they shaped the future, beginning with Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole. A huge topic, which lends itself to lots of discussion and looking at timelines!

Try to research the following:

Why was Florence Nightingale famous?

What did Louis Braille invent?

Can you name an American president from the past?

Happy Holidays!

A massive  ‘thank you’ to all the parents who helped make our Viking Day such a huge success! We appreciated all the help, and we were very impressed with the home made Viking outfits the children wore.

Thanks to Mrs Holmes for making a video, and to Mr Chapman for editing and uploading it onto our computers. We have been enjoying watching it today.

We’d like to wish you all a great Easter holidays and hope you have a relaxing break.

Best wishes,

the Year Two team!

Don’t forget next Wednesday we have our exciting ‘Viking Day’ !

We are looking forward to seeing lots of little Vikings invading our Year Two corridor, and we’ll be prepared for noise….

Parents are invited to help with activities, so if you feel like dressing up yourselves and helping to cook pancakes or get stuck into claywork, please let us know in advance!

We’ll also be looking forward receiving those decorated Easter Eggs for our ‘Walkabout’ on Thursday.

Literacy

March 12th, 2010 by Miss Williamson No comments »

This week we’ve been reading ‘The Tiger Child’ by Joanne Troughton. It is a folk tale set in the jungle in India.

During one of our literacy lessons we identified words written in capitals. We asked the following questions:

!. What effect do the capitals have on the way we read a sentence?

2. How else can we emphasise a word?

Click on the picture to take you to author information.

Click on the play button to hear some children reading aloud with emphasis!

We are looking at the Vikings for our Year 2 topic.

Click on the Viking ship for a great website, and type the keywords “beginners vikings”.

If you find any useful information linked with our topic, please bring it in to share with your classmates!

clapping

Well done 2L on your great assembly.  You said your lines really clearly and sang ‘Here comes the sun’ so lovely.  I am very proud of you all.  Here are some of the things that you liked about your assembly.

The part I liked the best is when I read my poem out.  I also liked the video of the dance  I did with Maddie.  I loved the assembly and I am very happy that everyone enjoyed it.  By Lucy.

The part I liked the best is when we read the poem and sang the song.  I liked the assembly.  By Lauren.

I liked the song ‘Here comes the sun’ because the song made me think of the beautiful hot sun.  By Zofia.

I liked it when me, Lauren and Lucy read our poems out to everyone.  I had two papers to read out it was so much fun.  I loved singing the happy song about the sun and then everyone clapped.  I was so happy.  My mum and Lucy’s mum saw our mirroring dance.  It was fun to watch us.  We were really happy after that.  By Maddie.

I liked all of the assembly because all of my class did a really good job because they all had loud voices especially when ‘Here comes the sun’ came on.  By Elektra.

I liked the part when the Islands said their lines because they were great.  By Adrianna.

My favourite part was the mirror dance because it was a friendly kind of dance.  I was happy because I knew the song and I was happy that I got Easter eggs from Elektra’s mum.  It was the best assembly.  By Varsha.

I liked the part in the beginning when I was first to speak and watching the movie of our dances at the end.  By Amelia.

My favourite thing was when I said my line and singing the song because it made me think of summer.  When I said my line it made me feel like I was famous because I saw lots of people infront of me.  By Alice.

I liked the part when we had to hold the adjectives up to describe cities and Islands.  It was a fun assembly.  By Daniel.

I liked the part when I said my lines.  I also liked the part where the Isalnds and cities read their poems because they were good.  By Yuito.

I liked the Island part because they were very calm and clear saying their lines.  I liked the bit when Clement spoke because it was fantastic.  By Gabriel.

My favourite part in the assembly was singing ‘Here comes the sun’.  It was fantastic.  By Gracie.

I liked the part where my dance was showed on the movie to everyone.  By Toby.

Who is looking forward to the next assembly in the summer term?
